Abstract

In December 2017, a US expedition to Kampot province in southern Cambodia yielded 3.8 km of mapped passages from 21 caves (in total, 34 caves were visited, 32 of which were new caves). The system Roung Dei Ho–Thom Ken was extended and again became the longest cave of the country (2,036 m). A 2017 international expedition left western Cambodia concluding that the Sampov Lun area definitely deserved a return trip in the future. This materialized in January/February 2018 when a team of Croatian, Chinese and German speleologists again targeted the surroundings of Sampov Lun town in the Phnum Proek district (Battambang province). Twenty–eight new caves were explored during the 2018 expedition and Roung Heyndan 5 was firmly established as the new third longest cave of Cambodia (1,577 m). In total, 7.3 km of underground passages were mapped. The expedition also made many biospeleological observations and found a new gecko species. In total, 62 caves and 9.9 km of passages are presented in this volume.
